The Enugu State Command of the Nigerian Police has started investigating a bloody wedding fight in Enugu which left several persons wounded and one person on danger list.
The bloody fight linked to security aides of Senator Gilbert Nnaji representing Enugu East senatorial district occurred at luxurious KOBB Civic Centre, Shoprite Arena, GRA Enugu on Tuesday afternoon.
It was gathered that the fracas broke out at the wedding reception of the daughter of Igwe Joseph Aniebo Ogbodo (A.k.a Small Joe), the traditional ruler of Amechi Uwani autonomous community Enugu State.
According to an eye-witness, trouble started when Senator Nnaji arrived at the venue while the newly wedded couple was dancing and moved to the High Table where another special guest identified as “Mama”, a South African based businessman, was seated.
Immediately, the Senator sat down at the High table inside the air-conditioned tent, one of his security aides approached Mama and gave him a dirty slap for daring to sit beside a senator.
Mama’s aide rushed the Senator’s security aide and also gave him a dirty slap.
Baffled by the audacity of Mama’s aide to slap his security aide, Nnaji ordered the horde of policemen with him to arrest him.
In the ensuing milieu, a free-for-all fight broke out between the security aides of the senator and the businessman, even as other guests scampered for safety.
It was gathered that gunshots rent the air while tear gas, daggers and broken bottles were freely used during the fight, which left one person fatally wounded and other people with various degrees of injuries.
The wedding reception reportedly ended in commotion.
It was however gathered that Mama was later arrested and detained at the Headquarters of Enugu State Police Command.
When our correspondent contacted, Ebere Amaraizu, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Enugu State, he confirmed the incident.
In a text message to our report, Amaraizu stated that the police have begun a probe of an incident that occurred at a reception at a tent with a view to finding out the cause of the incident and those involved.
