The South-East Governors Forum (SEGF) has assembled an economic team in furtherance of its commitment towards economic integration of the five states in the zone.
Dave Umahi, the Chairman of the forum and Ebonyi State Governor, announced the composition of the economic team while briefing journalists after their meeting at Enugu Government House on Sunday.
Umahi explained that the economic team comprises of two representatives from each of the five states that make up the zone.
According to the SEGF Chairman, the names of the members include Dr Chukwuma Agu, Eme Okoro, Ifeatu Onejeme, Mark Okoye and Professor Bernard Odo.
Others are Dennis Akukama, Professor Osita Ogbu, Professor Barth Nnaji, Obinna Mbata and Iyke Njoku.
Umahi said the meeting also discussed about the secretariat of the forum and resolved that states should forward nominees and the forum would give them to DFID who would do due diligence and return them to the forum.
He said other staff would be put together in addition to the ones already on ground in Enugu so that the robust secretariat could take off.
He disclosed that the same process for selection of Director General would be used for selecting a media consultant for the forum.
“The meeting equally discussed economic agenda for the South-East, such as power, commerce and seaport and taking necessary steps by referring them to our economic team so that they do preliminary studies, invite our consultants and brief us in our next meeting” Umahi said.
He further disclosed that the forum interfaced with the South-East Economic Commission (SENEC) who had a meeting with its economic team last week and they were expecting to know areas of cooperation and necessary assistance the forum would get from the commission.
Umahi said the forum equally interfaced with the Bank of Agriculture (BOA), which is important to Agriculture programme of the South-East to get a few briefing and asked the agency to get the capacity of states and meet with the economic team.
“What is important is that Anchor Borrowers programme of Federal Government is handled by them. They are not happy that funds for the South-East were not being accessed. They hope through the Governors we will get our due to the South-Eastr=.
“We discussed power needs which is catalyst to commerce. We have invited team of Geometrics. We know that Geometrics set up plant in Aba. It can power South-East and help us in Cement and Commerce. In due course, we will also meet with EEDC to interact with them and find out the challenges they are facing and ways we can improve on power distribution in the South-East” Umahi said.
Other Governors at the meeting were the host Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Dr Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Willie Obiano (Anambra). Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha was represented by his Deputy, Prince Eze Madumere.
