Sergeant Helen Sunday, the Police Orderly of Enugu State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo has been killed by unknown gunmen.
She was gunned down at about 10.pm on Tuesday night at Trans Ekulu Enugu while she was returning to work after signing off at her duty post.
It was gathered that she left Government House and boarded a commercial vehicle to IMT Campus II at Abakiliki road, where she boarded a Trans Ekulu bound commercial tricycle, popularly known as Keke NAPEP.
She was said to be alighting from the Keke NAPEP at Trans Ekulu when the gunmen struck.
The hoodlums’ double-crossed the Keke NAPEP and rained bullets at the Police Sergeant.
She was said to have screamed in pains and slumped on the ground.
The gunmen escaped from the scene, leaving her in a pool of her own blood.
She was later rushed to the hospital, but it was too late as doctors confirmed her dead.
As at the time this report was filed, the motive of the attack on her was unknown
Some residents of Trans Ekulu however attributed her death to the growing spate of armed robbery in the area.
“There is hardly any night that passes in Trans Ekulu that you do not get reports of two or three cases of armed robbery in this area” a resident confided in our correspondent.
Ebere Amaraizu, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Enugu State confirmed this report in a text message to our correspondent
Amaraizu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) said she was attacked and killed around Trans Ekulu axis on her way back from work by yet to be identified person/persons over a yet to be identified reason, reasons or motive.
 “It is a very unfortunate development. We have commenced investigations, and launched a manhunt for those responsible for the crime,” Amaraizu said.
Efforts to speak with the Deputy Governor or her aides yielded no fruits as at press time.
