Some students of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) narrowly escaped death as a two storey building belonging to Rt. Hon Edward Ubosi, the Speaker of Enugu State House of Assembly collapsed on Thursday.
The collapsed building is located in one of the plots within the large expanse of land annexed at the Temporary Site of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) by immediate past administration of Governor Sullivan Chime.
It was further gathered that the plot previously housed a section of the ESUT Mature Student Programme (MSP) before it was allocated to the Speaker for a private structure.
The speaker had commenced construction work at the site about a year ago and the two-storey building was already at the roof stage before it collapsed on Thursday morning.
There was no report of any casualty in the incident as at the time this report was filed.
A student of ESUT, who witnessed the incident, said he was trekking to the lecture hall with other students when suddenly they heard a loud sound from the direction of the uncompleted two-storey building.
“As soon as we heard the sound, we saw the building caving in and took to our heels. From a distance, we saw that the building had collapsed. We were all shocked” our source said.
It was gathered that the officials of Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority [ECTDA], visited the site of the building collapse immediately and sealed it up .
Attempts to reach the state commissioner for Enugu Capital Development Authority, [ECTDA], Hon. Chidi Aroh before filing this report was futile.
However, a source at ECTDA who pleaded anonymity said the Speaker erected the building without approval.
The Enugu State government has not made any official statement relating to the Speaker’s collapsed two storey building as at the time of filing this report.
