Ekweremadu jittery over Chime’s defection to APC, organises counter rally
Ike Ekweremadu, Deputy Senate President has become jittery over the defection of former Governor, Sullivan Chime from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to All Progressives Congress (APC).
On Sunday, Ekweremadu held a rally in Awgu under the aegis of Enugu West PDP to counter Chime’ crowded APC defection rally in his Udi hometown a week ago, which attracted John Odigie Oyegun, APC National Chairman, Aminu Tambuwal, Sokoto State Governor, and Osita Okechukwu, the Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON).
Other APC bigwigs at the Udi rally were George Muoghalu, the National Auditor and Osita Izunaso, National Organising Secretary.Emma Eneukwu, the National Vice Chairman for South-East, Peter Okonkwo, Bala Mohammed Gwagwalada, the National Treasurer and the State Chairmen from South-East states.
The Awgu counter rally put together by Ekweremadu attracted Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and members of the National and State Assemblies from the state as well as other top State Government functionaries and party bigwigs.
Ekweremadu announced at the rally that Enugu West has endorsed Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for a second tenure.
“We in Enugu West have unanimously decided that in 2019 we are going to support you as the governor because we are satisfied with your performance” Ekweremadu said.
The Senate number two man said there was no better way to thank Ugwuanyi than to keep supporting him.
Ekweremadu donated two buses to the party leadership in the zone to aid preparations for Ugwuanyi’s second term bid as governor of the state.
Addressing the rally, Governor Ugwuanyi said that local government elections will be conducted in the state in 2017.
He said that he would do his best to move the party and the state forward.
He said that his administration would also create development centres across the state to ensure even and rapid development.
The governor said that plans were underway to reorganize his administration in order to address some issues and ensure that government functioned effectively in the state.
He expressed gratitude to the PDP for providing him the platform to serve as a member of the House of Representatives as well as governor of the state.
Ugwuanyi said that he was appreciative of the support being accorded his administration, adding that enabling environment had been provided for economic and political matters to function effectively.
He described the zonal meeting hosted by Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, as a clear demonstration of the leadership qualities of the Deputy President of the Senate.
“Sen. Ekeremadu is no doubt a strong voice, a great son. We are indeed proud of you,” the governor said.
The rally which was attended by party stalwarts across the state, also witnessed no fewer than 5,000 APC, APGA and Labour Party members, defecting to the PDP.
Notable among the defectors is the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate for Enugu West senatorial election in 2015, Mrs. Ijeoma Chukwu.
