A group, Nsukka Stakeholders, has flayed foremost Nollywood star, Kenneth Okonkwo over scathing comments he made against Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi in a facebook post.
In the said facebook post, Okonkwo who also hails from Nsukka, alleged among others that Governor Ugwuanyi grabs local government money as his own, owes local government staff, hates Nsukka people and merely refurbishes roads.
Reacting at a press briefing in Enugu on Thursday, Charles Ogbo Asogwa, the spokesman of Nsukka Stakeholders said that the claim by Okonkwo clearly shows that he has not visited Enugu State in the past five years.
Asogwa who is the Enugu State Commissioner for Housing said the claim by the actor that Governor Ugwuanyi called Enugu people “wretched people” was a blatant lie, meant to incite the people against the Governor.
According to him, contrary to the allegation by Okonkwo that Governor Ugwuanyi was grabbing local government money as his own, the Governor does not tamper with local government money and has vowed not to do so.
On local government workers salaries, Asogwa said the comment of the actor shows his ignorance of the operations of local government system as workers salaries are drawn from federation allocation as determined by the Revenue Allocation, Mobilization and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).
“In other words, such monies come from Abuja. His care and concern for the welfare of local government workers was demonstrated when he (Governor) convened stakeholders meeting in Banquet Hall, Government House Enugu to determine the application of the first tranche of the state share of the Paris Club fund. Under his guidance, the decision was to use 75 percent of the fund for the payment of salary arrears of local government workers and 25 percent for pension’s arrears.
“To say that the Governor hates Nsukka town is yet another lie and misrepresentation of facts. Nsukka town has many appointments from the state, though they may not be designated as commissioners, they are holding very high positions in the Government of Governor Ugwuanyi.
“They include the following: Peter Odo-Permanent Secretary and Acting Chief of Staff to the Governor of Enugu State, Chief Mrs Apo Vivian Eze-SSA to the Governor on compliance, Barrister Ben Ezeugwu, member Governing Council of Enugu State College of Education Technical, Emeka Asogwa-SSA Youth to the Governor, Dr Chris Asadu-SSA to the Governor and eight Executive Assistants to the Governor” Asogwa said.
He noted that Nsukka got its fair share of Commissioners, Chief Milletus Eze-Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Uche Eze-Commissioner for Education, Charles Ogbo Asogwa-Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development and Dr Sam Ugwu-Special Adviser to the Governor on Education.
On road infrastructural development, Asogwa said for the actor to describe the monumental road construction taking place at Nsukka as refurbishing “is highly mischievous and a deliberate attempt to discredit the good work of the Governor.”
He listed the roads under construction as Opi Junction to Onuiyi Nsukka, Achara Road Nsukka to Ikenga Hotel, Ikenga Junction to Ofuluonu Junction, Ofuluonu to Odenigbo to Post Office and Total Roundabout and Orba Road Nsukka to Obollo-Afor express via Nru Nsukka and Orba among others.
Asogwa said apart from roads, other infrastructure developments include hospitals, schools, boreholes and electricity projects.
On democracy, human rights and rule of law, Asogwa said nobody can fault Governor Ugwuanyi in these areas as he operates a highly consultative and participatory government even at the grassroots.
